Rare Dutch doll sugar tongs by Cohen & Charles 1922

£1,695.00

Description

These sugar nips are the holy grail of sugar tongs, the exact item sold at Sotheby’s in 2021 for £ 2,772, including fees. They have a sprung mechanism that is in full working order, which is activated by squeezing the arms to close the legs and pick up the sugar. Cast from sterling silver, there is no damage to the enamel, and it’s very rare to find a set in this condition.

Made by renowned silversmiths Cohen & Charles, London 1922 and are fully hallmarked on the body and legs.

The design for the Dutch doll tongs was inspired by an illustration in a children’s adventure, “Two Dutch Dolls and a Golliwog,” written by Kate Upton in 1897. The characters became so popular that they were adapted for the theatre in 1901, and later in 1905, a ballet at the Empire theatre. Whoops, nearly forgot to say they measure 11.9cm in length.
